In More Flowers on a Table, Hockney arranges a varied cluster of stems and blossoms that feel newly gathered, each flower drawn with quick, responsive strokes before it has time to settle. The contrasting colours, a warm orange bloom against deeper purples and crisp whites, push the eye upward, emphasising the unpredictable height of the arrangement. The brown background removes any visual clutter, while the blue checked tablecloth gives the scene structure and rhythm, grounding the tall composition in a familiar domestic setting.

The work shows Hockney using the iPad to keep the still life alive rather than frozen. As petals shift and leaves lean, he follows the movement with immediate mark-making, capturing a fleeting moment of balance. Printed at scale in a limited edition, the piece maintains the spontaneity of the digital drawing while gaining the tactile presence of a physical artwork. It is a reminder that for Hockney, a simple vase of flowers is never static, it is a record of time, change and active looking.
  • "You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought."

    - David Hockney

Hockney has said that the iPad lets him draw “in the moment, not after it.” It gives him the speed to match what he sees, allowing every adjustment of a leaf or shift in colour to be captured before it slips away. The screen becomes a sketchbook that never slows him down. He can revise a line, layer colour, or brighten a highlight instantly, keeping the urgency of real-looking intact. When these digital images are printed, they carry that immediacy into the physical world. The result is a still life that feels alive a record of attention rather than a carefully staged arrangement.
